One of our previous reading units was "Readers Are Brave - We Can Use All We Know To Be Brave & Help Us Become Better Readers" The kids LOVED this unit. We got to decorate super hero masks and wear them whenever we read from our book bins. Kindergarten learned all about how the picture can be our "sidekick" just like Robin is to Batman. The picture can help us determine what a character is thinking/feeling/doing and can even help us infer about certain situations when the text doesn't tell us directly. The class was very brave and if they ever came across a hard or tricky word they wouldn't stop and say they couldn't read it - they would try and think about which reading strategy they've learned so far that could help them "solve" their tough problem!
We decided to have an Easter egg hunt last week before we got out for Easter break. I mean.. why should Preschool get to have all the fun?!? Well, this isn't your ordinary egg hunt. Instead of filling the plastic eggs with candy we decided to go the cavity-less route ;) We filled them with addition and subtraction math sentences. You would think telling 30 kids they had to go hunt for math problems instead of candy would be an issue... but they LOVED it! They got to use the gym & record their math equations and answers on a recording sheet. It was 20 minutes of educational fun!! |
