Every other morning we do a class 'Buzz Book.' I write a morning message on our magnetic handwriting paper & the class gets to take turns being "editors." I underline the mistakes in red and the kids have to tell/show me why it needs to be fixed. Lately I've been adding "mystery mistakes" into our Buzz Books & the kiddos have to use their detective eyes to figure out where it is located. Buzz Books help with so many concepts and the class LOVES doing them.
We've been working hard in math on decomposing numbers. The kids use our fancy "part-part-whole" plates (Dixie paper plates ;) )& pick a card from the deck and place it into the whole side of the plate (the entree section). Then they get out that many counters and show how the number can be broken down into 2 different parts.
We used the How-To book My First Soccer Game by Alyssa Satin Capucilli in Writer's Workshop. Alice is showing us how the author told us to use the INSIDE of our feet in order to dribble the soccer ball from side to side. This book was helpful in several different mini-lessons throughout this writing unit. We decided to test out our soccer skills by following the author's detailed How-To sentences. We learned how important word choice is and how details really do matter in pictures AND in our words. Otherwise, our readers might get confused, or even worse, hurt!
